CHALLENGE
Latina breast cancer survivors and their partners face unique challenges that can strain their relationships. These include cultural nuances around cancer, family dynamics, and communication styles, as well as potential language barriers and limited access to culturally sensitive mental health resources.
SOLUTION
To address this need, a multi-year research project, funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), brought together university medical research centers at the University of South Florida (USF) and the University of Central Florida (UCF), in collaboration with cancer research institutes across Florida. This collaborative team partnered with RMBO, a production company specializing in culturally relevant content, to adapt the “Our Relationship” (ORI) online couple intervention program for Latina breast cancer survivors and their partners.
APPROACH
- Content Adaptation: The team worked with RMBO to create 20 culturally relevant video vignettes depicting common relationship challenges faced by Latina breast cancer survivors and their partners. These vignettes were designed to be relatable and engaging, reflecting the specific cultural values, beliefs, and communication styles of this population.
- Technology Optimization: The ORI program was optimized for accessibility on various devices (smartphones, tablets, computers) to ensure ease of use for couples. The platform included a user-friendly video library where couples could select and view vignettes relevant to their specific relationship needs.
- Community Engagement: The team conducted focus groups with Latina breast cancer survivors, their partners, community partners (e.g., support groups, healthcare providers), and research advisors to gather feedback on the program’s content, format, and cultural relevance. This feedback was used to refine the program and ensure it met the unique needs of the target population.
RESULTS
- Increased Accessibility: The online format significantly improved access to couple intervention for Latina breast cancer survivors and their partners, overcoming barriers of location, time, and cost.
- Cultural Relevance: The use of culturally adapted vignettes featuring relatable characters and scenarios increased engagement and resonated with the target audience.
- Enhanced Communication: The program provided couples with a safe and structured space to discuss sensitive topics and learn effective communication skills.
- Improved Relationship Satisfaction: Preliminary data suggests that couples participating in the adapted ORI program reported improved relationship satisfaction, reduced stress, and increased coping skills.
